History

In 1946, following the end of World War ll, technicians and drafted workers from the Optical Department of the Toyokawa Naval Arsenal combined their collective advanced technical skills and established the Optical Product Division at Kowa.

The Electronics and Optics division of KOWA began the production of spotting scopes in 1952. Originally, they were developed as scopes for examining targets in shooting matches and saw official use in 1964 Olympic Games held in Tokyo.

Once discovered by birdwatchers, they gained unexpected popularity which gradually spread throughout the world of nature observations. Kowa Sporting Optics are highly appreciated as it is widely known that their quality and reliability are the result of more than half a century of experience and development.

Philosophy

A company that cares. Kowa manufacture optical instruments to view the beauty of our natural world – a world that Kowa want to protect for future generations.

As a responsible optics manufacturer, Kowa leads the way by example throughout the manufacturing process with a focus on environmental safety and energy conservation.

All Kowa lenses used in our PROMINAR range of sporting optics and binoculars utilise ECO GLASS, an environmentally friendly material containing no lead or other harmful substances.

Kowa’s optical instruments are designed and manufactured to produce stunning views of the wildlife that surrounds us.

Manufacturing

Kowa manufactures some of the finest sporting optics in the world with an optical heritage since 1954. From lens cutting, shaping and polishing through to final assembly, every optic that leaves the Kowa factory in Japan must pass a series of stringent tolerance tests before it is released to the market.

Every Kowa PROMINAR spotting scope is resolution tested using an optical collimator at the factory by Kowa optical experts to ensure the finest quality.

When you choose a Kowa optic you are investing in a optical product benefitting from decades of optical heritage, the finest materials and the latest technology.
Every Kowa optic is backed by a robust after-carer service so you can be sure that your optic remains in tip-top condition throughout its lifespan.

Fluorite crystal

Kowa is the only spotting scope manufacturer to use pure fluorite crystal in the manufacture of their optical lenses of their flagship range of sporting optics. What does this mean? Simply put – fluorite crystal delivers the best viewing experience available today, eliminating virtually all chromatic aberration and delivering images of outstanding resolution and contrast.

Fluorite Crystal is a natural mineral and it is extremely difficult to work with creating lengthy manufacturing processes to handle this delicate material. Creating a pure fluorite crystal lens takes specialised knowledge, skill, and costly investment. Kowa made the decision many years ago to develop these required skills to create pure fluorite crystal objective lenses to deliver the ultimate viewing experience.

Kowa have over a long period refined all procedures and techniques to make fluorite the 24ct gold standard, that our competitors would like to aspire.
